Our Homeschooling Journey (2008–2011)
In deciding to homeschool Sebastien, back when he was just eight years old, I ventured into uncharted territory. Confronted with a largely non-verbal child, I invented customised literacy and numeracy templates related to his daily life. And because he could see the relationship between his learning and his life, it became meaningful for him. I had also seemingly curbed his childhood aggressive tendencies through the consistent application of rewards and consequences. It was my desire to bring up a role model autistic young man who could contribute to the best of ability to mainstream society. But this was not the young man that Sebastien became.
