Focus on long-term prevention in meltdown management, not stopping meltdown behaviors

Introduction

Autism meltdowns are a challenging behaviour that both staff and students perceive as scary, intense, and worrisome. We worry that the autistic student will hurt themselves, hurt others, and/or destroy property. Furthermore, we are confused by how disproportionate the meltdowns are to apparent triggers. And all we want is for the meltdowns to stop.

But what many of us do not realise is that meltdowns are only the OUTWARD MANIFESTATION of the INNER DISTRESS of the autistic student. And so long as we do not understand the INNER WORKINGS driving meltdowns and focus simply on trying to suppress them when they occur, meltdowns will continue to occur.

Therefore, to reduce and manage meltdowns realistically, it is critical to (1) UNDERSTAND THE ROOT CAUSES and (2) RESPOND EMPATHETICALLY.

About EpiEco — A Long-Term, Preventive Approach

The self-formulated approach, EpiEco (treating EMOTIONAL WELLNESS as the EPICENTER of the ECOSYSTEM) is a RELATIONAL, PREVENTIVE, and EMPATHETIC approach towards understanding and managing Autism meltdowns.

Unlike the reactive nature of most training on meltdowns, which tends to focus on the meltdown episode and the autistic student, this highly interactive session is centred on teachers, allied educators, administrators, and even family caregivers, and equipping them with a toolkit of proactive insights and strategies.

EpiEco teaches participants about:

  • ANATOMY OF A MELTDOWN: Why autistic individuals have meltdowns;

  • MELTDOWN PROFILE OF AUTISTIC INDIVIDUAL: Factors influencing manifestation and intensity of meltdowns;

  • FUNCTIONS OF MELTDOWNS: How meltdowns are related to communication and expression;

  • ALLEVIATION OF MELTDOWNS: How we can all become effective ALLIES of autistic students (INDIVIDUALLY and COLLECTIVELY) and support them effectively by adopting RELATIONAL strategies and practices.
