A Mother’s Wish’s free 3-workshop series seeks to enhance the quality of life of profoundly autistic individuals by inviting caregivers to understand them beyond normative perspectives.
In Workshop 1 (October 25), participants were plunged into an imaginary tribal world to help them apprehend what it is like to be misunderstood and forced to abide by norms and expectations foreign to their being. This is the experience of a profoundly autistic individual living in our mainstream world.

Workshop 2 (November 1) tackled the parenting journey through the meltdown lens. It debunked the perceptions that (1) intense meltdowns of profoundly autistic individuals are inevitable and (2) our reactive attitude toward meltdowns. Instead, the workshop highlighted prevention and alleviation strategies — all part and parcel of improving our relationship with profoundly autistic individuals.

This week, Workshop 3 (November 8) adopts a chronological approach: it invites participants to explore the parenting journey of raising profoundly autistic loved ones through the latter's childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Recognising the need to evolve parenting perspectives and strategies, and learning how to do so, are critical to navigating this journey.

Below is a clip from Workshop 2 explaining why EpiEco — treating the Profoundly Autistic Individual as the Epicenter of the Ecosystem — is key to alleviating meltdowns.
