Painting Series by Jean-Sebastien Choo, Self-taught Autistic Artist #10— Rainbow Twilight

(14 x 11 in, water color and poster color, canvas panel, SGD180 + shipping)

The title of this painting, “Rainbow Twilight” combines a bit of both Sebastien and me — his embrace of the “rainbow” of colours and my love of the “twilight” hour, i.e., sunsets.

For me, it celebrates one of the most memorable moments of my parenting journey when Sebastien stepped out onto the balcony of the AirBnb apartment in Zadar (Croatia) to hang clothes with us. He pointed out the glorious sunset unfurling before us and listed its hues — "red, pink, yellow, orange" — with a slight smile. He blew me away.

You see, for years, Sebastien had accompanied Jerome and me in catching sunsets in many countries around the world. Yet, as Sebastien barely looked up at the skies, it was evident that Sebastien did not share our enthusiasm for sunsets.

But that day, Sebastien had pointed out the sunset to me, because I cared about sunsets. So, with that one word, he showed me that he cared about me. It was such a simple, but profoundly moving, gesture, and a brilliant illumination of how far he had come along. And I was glad that I was finally able to recognise it and hold it close to my heart.
